How Does Counselling Work?
Despite research being done into counselling, it is not yet known exactly why and how it works. What has come out of the research though, is the suggestion that the benefits of therapy come from the relationship between counsellor and client.
This suggestion resonates with me because we live in a relational world. A place where our past and present relationships unconsciously influence the way we act and react to others. By working in relationship with a therapist, you will become more aware of your patterns of behaviour. And this will play a big part in you resolving your personal issues.
What Sort Of things Can You Help Me With?
Life is full of ups and downs and as your counsellor/coach I can help you with all it throws at you whatever that may be. Supporting you as you work through your issues and move towards achieving your ambitions and goals.
I can help you to:
Understand your problems and what is causing them, clarify what you want in life and the direction you want to go, explore relational problems with friends, family or colleagues, manage your emotions and thoughts.
And I can help you with the following issues:
Abuse, Addiction, Anger, Anxiety, Bullying, Career, Child related issues, Confidence, Depression, Disengagement, Discrimination, Grief, Life Goals, Miscarriage, Relationships, Self-harm, Stress, Spirituality, Terminal illness & Illness, Trauma, Work Related Issues and more.
What Happens In The First Session?
Our first therapy session will be the opportunity for us to meet. For you to ask any questions you may have, to talk about what brought you to therapy and about what you hope to achieve from it.
It is also the chance for you to consider if counselling is the right solution for you and if I am the right therapist for you.
Is What I Tell You Confidential?
Confidentiality is a fundamental part of counselling/coaching. It is essential to create a safe space in which you feel you can talk openly and freely about the issues that are important to you. I would not give any information you share with me to your doctor or anyone else without discussing it with you first and getting your permission to do so.
The only time confidentiality may be broken would be if there was a perceived risk of serious harm to yourself or others, or if required to by law.
How Long Will I Need Counselling/Coaching For?
How long you are in counselling/coaching depends on you, your needs, what you want to achieve and the depth you want to work at. So for example if you are looking to change jobs but suffer debilitating anxiety interviewing, therapy could be long or short-term. Short-term therapy focusing on giving you the tools you need to present yourself confidently in interviews. Long-term therapy dealing with the root cause of your anxiety and where it came from, providing a solution that will help you with anxiety in every aspect of your life.
Counselling/coaching can also be used on an ongoing basis for self-development. A space where you can gain a better understanding of who you are, your strengths and weaknesses. Using what you learn to improve your effectiveness at work and in relationships, so you can live a more fulfilling life.
What Type Of Counselling/Coaching Do You Practice?
There are lots of types of counselling/coaching. All of them with their own set of theories and ideas on how to work with clients. Most therapists/coaches basing their work with clients on the model of counselling/coaching they have studied and practiced.
I am an integrative counsellor/coach. This means I draw on all therapeutic/coaching models for my work with clients and am not limited to one school of thought. So I put my clients and the issues they are facing at the centre of my work with them, tailoring each session to their individual needs.
